Weather Information Centre
In the event of adverse weather, it is important for everyone to keep informed and be prepared, as a precaution. The city encourages residents and business owners to continue to follow updates from relevant authorities including the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Environment Canada.
City Services and Facility Impacts
Impacts on city services and facilities (such as waste collection and closures) may be listed below and communicated through social media before or during adverse weather. Please check back often for updates.
Before Adverse Weather
72-hour Preparedness Kit
The city encourages all residents and businesses to ensure they have a 72-hour preparedness kit on hand at all times. Some suggested items the kit should include are:
- Food items (for people and pets)
- First Aid Kit
- Prescription medication or regularly used medical supplies
- Radio
- Flashlight
- Batteries
Use of candles for light are not encouraged as flashlights or battery-operated lights are safer.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has developed an emergency kit checklist – click here to view.
Prepare Loose Items
During high winds, please ensure you have any loose items on your property taken inside or tethered down including items such as:
- Barbeques
- Trampolines
- Hanging Baskets or Planters
- Garbage Bins
- Bulk Garbage Items Awaiting Pick-up
Review Winter Safety Tips
While winter is a great season for outdoor activities, snow can bring both fun and danger for children. Snow plows and snow clearing equipment are a potentially dangerous draw for younger children. The city’s winter safety awareness program is designed to keep children safe around snow clearing equipment and during winter play. Safey Snowplow is the city’s winter safety mascot, and every year he teaches children in grades K-6 important safety messages. View our resources below:
During Adverse Weather
Monitor Road Conditions
Driving or commuting during any significant weather event is not recommended. If you must drive or commute, please use extreme caution.
Our city works hard to keep our streets safe and clear from snow and ice. The Snow Plow Tracker is an interactive map that allows you to follow active city vehicles as they clear the roads and you can see where they have been in the past 2, 4, 12 and 24 hours.
