June 5, 2024 – (Mount Pearl, NL)

At last night’s Public Council meeting, the City of Mount Pearl awarded a $15,547,218
(plus HST) contract to JMJ Holdings Ltd. to design and build a new state-of-the-art community centre at the Team
Gushue Sports Complex.

KPMG Ltd. conducted a feasibility study after the need for a new community hub was identified in the City’s 2019
Recreation Master Plan. The study suggested a new facility was necessary to replace the aging Park Place Community
Centre, citing accessibility and parking issues as some of the reasons it no longer meets the requirements of Mount Pearl
residents.

In contrast, this new facility can be taken advantage of year-round, with a splash pad that transforms into an outdoor
ice-skating rink during the winter. Spanning 24,500 square feet, the building will include a multi-purpose space equipped
with a stage and retractable bleachers. This area is designed to accommodate a wide range of events, from local theatre
productions to corporate meetings, banquet functions, and other programming opportunities, with a seating capacity of
500 and standing room for approximately 1000.

Mayor Dave Aker expressed the Council’s vision, stating, “This represents a milestone in the progress of our strategic
plan with a goal to create a multi-purpose gathering place for inclusive community programming. This community center
will benefit residents of all ages. We are confident it will provide seniors with increased opportunities to socialize and
connect with younger generations when compared with the Park Place facility, which in turn will strengthen community
bonds.”

Construction is expected to be completed in early 2026. Funding for the centre will be sourced from a combination of city
funded and cost-shared funding programs.
