Neighbourhood Watch Program

Combating crime together in the most effective way – before it starts!

This is a community based crime prevention program to reduce and deter crime and encourage strong neighbourhood relationships.  It involves neighbours working together by watching out for each other’s property and alerting police of suspicious activity. Neighbourhood Watch is coordinated in partnership by the City of Mount Pearl Municipal Enforcement Division, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, and the Mount Pearl Citizens’ Crime Prevention Committee.

What is Neighbourhood Watch?
It’s a community based crime prevention program to reduce and deter crime and encourage strong neighbourhood relationships. It involves neighbours working together by watching out for each other”s property and alerting police of suspicious activity. It teaches residents to secure their property, be aware of their surroundings, communicate with their neighbours, and help combat crime before it happens.

How does it work?
The program works through mutual aid – neighbours watching out for neighbours. Members of Neighbourhood Watch learn how to be alert to suspicious activity and how to respond appropriately to potential treats.

Neighbourhood Watch:
Does not require a great deal of time from its members.
Does not require you to patrol your neighbourhood.
Does not ask you to take on the role of police or chase suspected criminals.
Does not involve being a nosy neighbour or invading personal privacy.

Watch for suspicious activity:
Vehicles passing by numerous times.
Person taking a short cut through a backyard.
Unauthorized door-to-door canvassing.
Loitering around a business that is closed.
Person looking into car windows or checking door handles.
Person entering a side yard.
Person running … are they carrying anything? Do they have a backpack?
Loud arguments or fighting in the street.

If you see something suspicious:
Write down the make, model, colour and licence plate number of the suspicious vehicle.
Write down clothing and physical descriptions of suspicious persons.
Note the direction of travel.
Call police immediately. Don’t assume someone else has called.

How do I get involved in Neighbourhood Watch?

Block Captain: You can start a Neighbourhood Watch program by becoming a Block Captain. The city’s Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator will assist you in developing a Neighbourhood Watch program and provide start up resources and guidelines.

Watch Member: If there is an existing Neighbourhood Watch in your area, you can become a Watch Member. You will become connected with your Block Captain who will welcome you to your new program and provide important resources and educational tips.
